It is interesting that both McNair and Upshaw perform repertoire that is similar Listening to NINON VALLIN provides for ample vocal expertise with a broader range of composers

I agree, Purcell is underrated. I also feel the same about Arcangelo Corelli.

ELIAS12186- That last stanza, which isn't in my version, is talking about how when a mortal's will is in the presence of an immortals (apollo or personified here as music/love etc.) that he becomes aware of "Apollo's lore" or "what he is about" without studying Apollo/ art/music. In a sense, the more one experiences love or music the less he needs to try to understand it and in return, the more one tries to understand art through study or reason, the less visible it becomes.

If thats the original key, its very unusual for purcell

Can someone explain the last stanza to me? O, how I solitude adore! That element of noblest wit, Where I have learnt Apollo's lore, Without the pains to study it. For thy sake I in love am grown With what thy fancy does pursue; But when I think upon my own, I hate it for that reason too, Because it needs must hinder me From seeing and from serving thee.

I think that McNair is an incredibly skilled vocalist ... to be a top class Mozart Soprano on one hand, to be a superb American Jazz Singer on the other (see Come Rain or Come Shine, the Harold Arlen Songbook recorded with Andre Previn and David Finck - try Stormy Weather) and then to glorify Purcells music so beautifully - she's one special singer!!!

could you express more reverence to yourself? probably not.

Underrated as much as baroque music is generally. But is his probably in the top 5 baroque composers performed today.

credevo che questo brano fosse bello cantato da P.J. ma non avevo ascoltato Silvia!Eccellente!

I wasn't really referring to myself - I am familiar with a range of Baroque composers, thanks :) In terms of the general public's musical taste, though, I think people have limited knowledge of composers from any period. The composers you mention may be well-known to many music lovers, but probaby not to a wider audience. Which is a shame. (Incidentally, I recently had a man ask me if C.W. Gluck was considered obscure, when I mentioned I was performing an aria of his. :P)

Huh? There are many well-known Baroque composers. Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Telemann, Corelli, Purcell, Rameau, Couperin (father & son), Scarlatti (father and son), Pergolesi, Pachelbel, Sweelinck, Buxtehude, Schutz, Monteverdi, Zelenka, Albinioni, Locatelli, the recently-discovered Wassenaer, Jeremiah Clarke (the real author of "Purcell's Trumpet Voluntary") ... seek on YouTube, and ye shall find.
