It really depends on what sort of trasitions you use. Good timing with the clips can make up for a lack of thematic trasitions. It is most important that the video flow with the music.

There were thematic reasons for that. It would've destroyed Katara's character if she'd killed Zuko, not to mention the Avatar series wouldn'tve been half as good as it was.
