The Surfin' Bird (Forty-two Years Later)

Back

The Surfin' Bird (1964) was a popular song in the Vietnam Era. I've revisited the theme. *NEW EDIT May 23 2008 - 150,000 view later I'd just like to mention that I'm happy that this video is so popular. I haven't really looked at this for a long time. Rereading my message below that I left two years ago, I've realized that there's one thing I still don't understand, and I suppose is what concerns me the most still: why do our reporters hold back? Why does anyone need to search for "shocking" war footage when it should be readily available? Why does CNN still think kicking in doors is good video reporting? It feels like the Army doesn't need to censor reporters, the reporters are already censored; whether its self-censorship or maybe the broadcasters that feel viewers can't handle strong images... I'm not sure. But I find it very troubling. I don't care what your politics are, but I will say this: We all support this war, voluntarily or involuntarily through our tax dollars, and consequently we need to see what we're doing. But we don't. And I think that's a crime within itself. All the rest is commentary. Oh and the quote should say "sacrifice" not sacrafice. Jesus former self! Never thought that typo would be so annoying 'till now.. poor, poor Hemingway. :/ Author here: I figured I'd wait a couple pages to see what kind of comments I got. Basically, my vision of this was simply to represent the realities of war. I don't think my 2 minute video is one-sided or political at all, and if you actually think that, you're a fool. Frankly, it just shows the brutality of war. War is brutal. The parallels between Vietnam and the Iraq stand despite politics; remember, there are both people who still contend Vietnam was necessary and unnecessary, just as there are/will be for Iraq; and yet, the story is very similar. Remember, history does not repeat itself--but it does sometimes rhyme. What I do believe *is* BS about this war is that unlike Vietnam, the reporters hold back. I think we should see what war is really like; it gives a humbleness that we as Americans desperately need. It's not a game, it's not a CNN stock footage of someone kicking in a door, it's bullets flying by--it's helicopters splattering real people in a field--it's a humvee blown apart in the middle of a road--it's a chicago slaughterhouse--and presenting that is not political, it is not "hippie", it does not mean I want "America to be invaded", it means I place human thought above our animalistic tendencies. Sincerely, Jacob. PS. I encourage anyone interested in killing to first consider saving. Peace, ya'all.
